Before you automate it,
check you
still need it.

Many teams are handing reports, approvals, and meetings to AI without first asking whether anyone still uses them. Automating a report nobody reads saves very little.

Do We Need This is a shared workspace plus a skill for Claude or Codex. You map how the work is done, collect evidence on what it is for, and decide with your team what to keep, change, or stop.

How it works

Run these steps yourselves in the workspace, or with an outside facilitator.

  1. Pick one piece of work

Choose a process, task, rule, or software feature. Agree where it starts and ends, and who it affects.

  2. Map how it works

Use the skill in Claude or Codex to read documents, look at the software, or interview the people involved. The steps, sources, and open questions are saved to the workspace.

  3. Ask what it is for

For each part, ask what it achieves, who relies on it, and what would happen if it stopped. Note where people use their own judgement and whether that is still needed. Record disagreements and any evidence that the work matters.

  4. Discuss it with your team

Collect written feedback or run a workshop. Someone on your team hosts. People vote on their phones, then talk through the results and the evidence.

  5. Decide what to do

Decide whether to keep, change, stop, or look into it further, and record the decision. If you try stopping something, write down what exactly stops, who owns it, when you will review it, and what would make you start again.

  6. Check the result

See whether the change saved work, caused problems, or just moved the work to someone else. Record what you found and decide whether to continue, adjust, or undo it.

What you get

A process map with evidence and open questions attached to each part, feedback forms, live voting for workshops, and a record of every decision. Voting works on phones.

The research runs in your own Claude or Codex, connected to the workspace over MCP. The AI can suggest changes, but only a person can confirm a decision.

Want someone outside the team to run it?

You can run workshops yourselves. But if the person who owns a process also leads the discussion, people tend to hold back. I can prepare the session, moderate it, and show your team how the method works.

Many of the questions come from David Graeber’s The Utopia of Rules and Bullshit Jobs. They are for examining tasks, not for judging the people who do them.
