Documentation
Do We Need This has three parts that work together:
- The discovery skill. A set of instructions for Claude Code, Codex, or another AI tool. It interviews you about a piece of work, asks the questions that fit it, and ends with a draft decision. It needs no account.
- The workspace. A web app at doweneedthis.com/app that stores the process map, evidence, questions, and decisions. Your team uses it for feedback forms, live voting, and confirming decisions.
- The desktop app. The same workspace, kept in a file on your computer.
Choose where to start
| You want to | Go to |
|---|---|
| Assess one piece of work in a conversation | Quickstart |
| Save what the conversation found | Connect your AI tool |
| Collect your team’s answers and vote | Feedback and workshops |
| Record a keep, change, stop, or investigate decision | Decisions |
| Produce an RFP, change request, or deck from the evidence | Goal and deliverables |
| Assess what an old business application does | Map a codebase |
| Work from a file on your computer | Desktop app |
The steps, in order
- Run the discovery skill on one piece of work and read the summary.
- Create a workspace and a project, then connect your AI tool and save the assessment.
- Add evidence and open questions to the map in the workspace.
- Invite contributors and run written feedback or a workshop on the questions people disagree about.
- Propose and confirm a decision.
- If the project needs a document, freeze a baseline and have your AI tool produce it.
- If you tried stopping something, record the outcome at the review date.
What you need
- An AI tool that supports skills or MCP: Claude Code or Codex.
- A web browser.
- For the workspace: an account. A full seat costs $99 per month and includes 20 contributor seats. The trial lasts 14 days and requires a card.
- For a workshop: contributors with a phone or a browser.
Rules that apply everywhere
- The assessment covers work, never people. There are no scores and no rankings.
- Keep, change, stop, and investigate are all valid outcomes.
- AI tools propose. Only a person confirms a decision.
- Votes and written feedback appear without names.
