Connect your AI tool
Connecting lets your AI tool read and write the map in your workspace. The server address is:
https://doweneedthis.com/mcp
Before you start
- Create a workspace and a project: Workspace and projects.
- Sign in with an account that has an Owner or Full member seat. Contributors cannot connect an AI tool.
- Load the discovery skill in your AI tool: Quickstart.
Claude Code
-
Add the server:
claude mcp add --transport http do-we-need-this https://doweneedthis.com/mcp -
Start Claude Code and run
/mcp. -
Select
do-we-need-thisand follow the browser sign-in. -
Return to Claude Code. The server is listed as connected.
Codex
-
Add the server:
codex mcp add do-we-need-this --url https://doweneedthis.com/mcp -
Sign in:
codex mcp login do-we-need-this -
Finish the sign-in in the browser.
The same server is defined in ~/.codex/config.toml as:
[mcp_servers.do-we-need-this]
url = "https://doweneedthis.com/mcp"
Other tools
Use any AI tool that supports remote MCP servers over streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in. Enter the address above.
The desktop app uses a different connection. See Desktop app.
Check the connection
Ask your AI tool:
List my Do We Need This workspaces.
The tool returns the workspaces your account can access. If the list is empty, check that you signed in with the account that owns the workspace.
Save an assessment
After a conversation with the discovery skill, ask:
Save this assessment to my Do We Need This workspace.
The AI tool then:
- Lists your workspaces and asks which one to use. It never picks the first.
- Lists the projects and asks which one to use, or creates a project if none fits.
- Reads the current map.
- Saves the items, relationships, evidence, questions, answers, and stakeholders against the revision it read.
- Adds a proposal for the draft decision.
It reports what was saved after the server confirms it.
Open the project in the workspace and check the Map tab. Each saved item appears on the map. The evidence, questions, and stakeholders are in the item’s panel.
What the AI tool cannot do
- Confirm a decision. It can only propose; you confirm in the workspace.
- Set an owner, a review date, or restart conditions. It leaves them empty for you.
- Buy or change a subscription.
- Delete items. Only relationships and stakeholders can be removed through it.
Fix a conflict
If someone edits the map while the AI tool is saving, the save is rejected. Ask the tool to read the map again and repeat the save. Repeating a save with the same request ID does not create duplicates.
