Desktop app
The desktop app runs the workspace on your computer. Each workspace is one file with the .dwnt extension. You keep the file wherever you like.
The desktop app covers discovery, maps, evidence, questions, stakeholders, decisions, and goals, baselines, and deliverables. It does not include live workshops, written feedback forms, contributor links, member invitations, or checkout. Use the web workspace for those.
Install
- Windows. Run the installer. It installs for your user and needs no administrator rights. Or extract the ZIP and run the app.
- macOS. Extract the ZIP and move the app to your Applications folder.
No account
The desktop app needs no account, sign-in, or subscription. It works offline and sends nothing to a server. Decisions you confirm are recorded under your computer’s user name.
Create or open a workspace
On the start screen:
- Select New workspace to create a
.dwntfile. - Select Open… to open an existing one.
- Select a file under Recent to reopen it.
One window holds one open file. The app reopens your last file at launch. While a file is open, the app locks it, so a second window or another computer cannot write to it at the same time. Choose Close workspace to release the lock.
Anyone who has the file can open it.
Use Save a copy… to make a backup or a copy to share.
Connect your AI tools
- Open Connect your AI tool in the sidebar.
- Copy the settings for your tool:
- Claude Desktop: merge the JSON into
claude_desktop_config.json(Settings → Developer → Edit Config), then restart Claude Desktop. - Claude Code: run the command in a terminal.
- Codex: add the block to
~/.codex/config.toml.
- Claude Desktop: merge the JSON into
- Keep the desktop app running while the AI tool uses it.
Your AI tool then reads and writes the open workspace file. It proposes decisions; you confirm them in the app. With no file open, tool calls return not_found.
Then install the discovery kit in the same tool, as described next.
Install the discovery kit
The kit holds the skills, commands, and agents your AI tool uses to run an assessment. The app installs it for you and ships the version that matches the app.
- Open Connect your AI tool in the sidebar and find Discovery kit.
- Tick the tools to install it for. The app ticks Claude Code and Codex when it finds their folders on your computer.
- Select Install. The dialog lists every folder the app will write to. Confirm to install.
The files go to your user folders, so they apply to every project and every session:
| Tool | Skills | Commands | Agents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | ~/.claude/skills | ~/.claude/commands | ~/.claude/agents |
| Codex | ~/.agents/skills | not used by Codex | ~/.codex/agents |
If you set CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR or CODEX_HOME, the app uses those folders instead. On Windows, ~ is %USERPROFILE%.
- The app writes nothing until you confirm.
- It never overwrites a file it did not write, or one you changed afterwards. Those files are listed under Not overwritten.
- After you install a newer version of the app, a tool shows Update available. Select Install again to update it.
- Remove deletes the files the app installed and leaves the rest.
In Claude Code the commands have no prefix: /discover, /map-codebase, and /conclude.
For Claude Desktop and other tools, use the ZIP and the steps in the Quickstart.
Use the assistant
The assistant is a pane beside the page. Ask it to change the open workspace, for example Add the monthly close report. It edits only through the same tools an external AI tool uses. You still confirm decisions.
- Open the pane and select Assistant settings.
- Choose one:
- Sign in with ChatGPT. Your ChatGPT plan pays for the usage.
- API key. Add a key for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Mistral, or OpenRouter. The app stores keys in your operating system’s keychain.
- Choose a model and write a request.
There is no Claude subscription sign-in. If you use Claude, connect Claude Desktop or Claude Code as described above.
Conversations are kept per workspace, up to 20.
